1 September 2009:

PRESS RELEASE

SUBJECT:  FALLING THROUGH THE CRACKS !!!

A few years ago, the VA contracted with Houses of Hope here in Lincoln, but, the Lincoln VA Substance Use Disorder Program (SUDP) failed to fill the beds.  The Lincoln SUDP Clinic, with new leadership by Maryann Thompson, was awarded funds to start a new pilot project called the Promise House with the understanding that a need had to be shown for the VA to continue to fund the Promise House. The Lincoln VA SUDP did successfully prove need for supportive living for recovering veterans here in Lincoln.  However, the funding runs out Sept. 30, 2009 and the VA has decided to not continue funding the Promise House, concentrating more on the Omaha VA. Currently, the Promise House is at capacity with nine veterans in recovery.

The war is old news now.  Veterans are taking a back seat in importance.  There is no draft.  There nothing to make this war important to Americans.  There is just a side note on the body count on the daily news.

Once again veterans recovering from alcohol and drugs in Lincoln and surrounding and outstate rural areas of Nebraska find themselves turned out into the street by the Veterans Health Administration.  While every effort will be made to assist those at the Promise House to find alternative housing, such as entering housing in Omaha, this is not in all of their best interest nor does it replace the need for putting the Veteran first.

Members of the Lincoln VA SUDP Alumni who graduated from this program know the need and have seen the success of this program.  We also know that 1 dollar spent on treatment saves the tax-payer at least 10 dollars in social costs.

Alcohol and drug addiction is a disease no different than cancer.  People that do not understand addiction think that the alcoholic/addict has a choice.  This may have been true early in the drinking or using career of the alcoholic/addict, but there is a point where the addict loses control and loses the choice of whether or not to drink.  It is only through programs like the Lincoln VA SUDP that alcoholic/addicts regain a choice on whether or not to take the first drink.

Please help anyway you can to save the Promise House for recovering veterans here in Lincoln by contacting your representatives on this issue.  Veterans are worth it !!!

2008:

To celebrate Veteran's day our Wednesday AA meeting had a feast.  Not on Veteran's Day, but on the day after...so...just as good and we were all happy to be clean and sober!

We had an awesome AA meeting on the 29th of October to celebrate the 10th year of AA at the VA!  We are getting a little crowded in room 200, but...we all love each other!  It's not like we haven't been herded into cattle cars before!

We had a Chili Feed in October during the Texas Tech vs. NU game that was a resounding success!  We hope to do more events like that in the future with a featured speaker and great fellowship!

We are raising money for returning veterans that need a leg up on surviving Lincoln, staying clean and sober and recoverying from injuries incurred while on active duty.  The transition back home is not easy.  We want to help veterans and their families when the government can't.  We are proud to help our returning brothers and sisters as long as they want to help themselves!  We can't do it alone.

We are not associated or aligned with the Veterans Administration.  However, we gratefully accept the VA's support in the activities and events that we hold on our grounds and we work in cooperation with the staff at the Lincoln VA Clinic.

Thank you to the kitchen at the Lincoln VA in supporting us.  They do a wonderful job of catering the Holiday Dinner and they have always work hard to support us.  Thanks to the Lincoln VA kitchen staff !!!

Thanks also to the Lincoln VA Campus Police.  They have been very cooperative in opening doors for us and meeting our needs.

Last, but not least, thank you to all the VA staff !!!  We know you do the best you can and always keep veteran care first in your minds.

To all of you...you are always welcome to join us and help us celebrate recovery from drugs and alcohol !!!
